
Thumbay University Hospital Conducts Breast Cancer Awareness Program Supported by Ajman Police
In line with its commitment to build healthier communities and to promote health awareness, Thumbay University Hospital, the largest private academic hospital in the region located at Thumbay Medicity, Al Jurf, Ajman, conducted a Breast Cancer Awareness program on 15th October 2020. Organized to mark the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the program was supported by Ajman Police and had various programs highlighting the importance of early detection and treatment of breast cancer.
The program included a cake-cutting ceremony attended by Major Noura Al Shamsi – Head of the Department Media and Public Relations of Ajman Police and Lt. Rashid Al Kaabi from Protocol Department, in the presence of Dr. Manvir Singh Walia – COO of Thumbay University Hospital, Dr. Fozi Abozaid Dakilah – Medical Director of the hospital, and other members of the hospital’s administrative team. This was followed by a pink-ribbon formation by the staff of the hospital, and a short talk by the medical director on the importance of early detection and treatment. The delegation from Ajman Police toured the hospital’s advanced facilities.
Commenting on the importance of the Breast Cancer Awareness event, Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Vice President of the Healthcare Division of Thumbay Group said, “Thumbay Hospitals are committed to promoting healthy lifestyles and creating awareness on the importance of timely health check-ups, among communities. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women worldwide. According to studies by the Global Cancer Observatory, in 2018 alone, there were over 2 million new cases and more than 600,000 deaths due to breast cancer. Every year, the month of October is celebrated worldwide as ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month.’

Music to Enhance Quality of Life and Healing Process of Long-Term Care Patients at Thumbay University Hospital
Happy Hour every week at indoor “Therapeutic garden” helps patients to relax and stay close to nature
The Long-Term Care unit of Thumbay University Hospital, the largest private academic hospital in the region with 350 beds located at Thumbay Medicity, Al Jurf, Ajman, has added music to the services they offer residents, to reduce anxiety and depression among them and to enhance their healing process. As a beginning, music is now played for residents who have specifically asked for it, as they believe it soothes their minds and helps them adjust better to the life at the Long-Term Care facility.
A number of studies in recent times have suggested the use of music for the benefit of patients in long term care. Especially in people with conditions like Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, music has been found to reduce agitation and unhappiness.
The hospital is also making arrangements to enable patients play their favorite music instruments and create their own music, as part of the Long-Term Care unit’s efforts to help the patients pursue their creative interests and to keep them engaged in productive activities. Dr.Manvir Singh Walia, COO of Thumbay University Hospital says that by providing music of the patients’ liking, the hospital has introduced a unique way to support them. “This is in line with our holistic approach to care. We have seen that Long-Term Care residents are comforted by their preferred kind of music, helping them communicate more and better, and keeping them motivated on the path to recovery” he said.
In addition, the hospital has also launched a “happy hours” initiative for its long-term care patients, under which they’ll be taken to the hospital’s Therapeutic Garden every Friday, for an hour of relaxation and being close to nature. A patient in the Long Term Care unit of Thumbay University Hospital, Mr. Lancelot Frank recently experienced a livemusic session at the hospital,conducted by House of Pianos, Dubai. A senior engineer and music enthusiast and a UAE resident for over 33 years, Lancelot is fast recuperating at Thumbay University Hospital.
Ms. Oxana Uncu, an award-winning Moldavian pianist and singer/songwriter and Mr. Abner D’Souza, musician and Product Marketing Manager at House of Pianos were part of the team that performed for Lancelot. Commenting on their cooperation with the hospital to make this possible, the Founder/CEO of House of Pianos, Mr. Shavkat Mamajonov said, “House of Pianos has been established to serve the community, be it artists, music lovers, beginners or those who need music as a therapy for treatment. The patient’s brother, Mr. Naveen Frank says that listening to music helps Lancelot cope better with his treatment and keeps him cheerful and optimistic. “He has always been fond of music and I’m sure it is giving him a renewed energy as he finds his way to recovery, helping him relax his mind and lift his mood,” he said. Naveen also performed old sentimental songs for his brother on the harmonica and guitar.

A special ceremony to mark the occasion was held at the hospital recently. Medicines are strong agents programmed to solve health problems, but if not properly used, results in harm or even death. The academic health system of Gulf Medical University is sharing its wealth of medicines knowledge in patient care at Thumbay University Hospital. With an experienced team of clinical pharmacy preceptors and faculty, the GMU College of Pharmacy is running the Clinical Pharmacy Department at Thumbay University Hospital to ensure rational drug use.
Pharmacists have a long history of discovering and manufacturing medicines. Clinical Pharmacy is a relatively new area of practice of pharmacists. Pharmacists work with doctors and nurses to provide direct patient care in rational drug use. With clinical expertise pharmacists recommend and modify right medicines to inpatients and outpatients.
Five preceptors of the College who were practicing as clinical pharmacists in Thumbay Hospital Ajman is transferred to Thumbay University Hospital. Faculty with license is joining the team to provide clinical pharmacy services. Three new faculty are joining the College from USA, Australia, and UAE to strengthen the clinical pharmacy team.

The collaboration extends to providing advanced treatments including tertiary and quaternary care, long term care, lab & radiology services and sample testing to patients referred to Thumbay University Hospital, Al Jurf, Ajman.
Ajman Specialty Hospital has signed two separate agreements with Thumbay University Hospital and Thumbay Labs, according to which the residents of Ajman can easily access state-of-the-art healthcare facilities including specialist treatments and diagnostic tests. The agreement was signed at Thumbay University Hospital, Al Jurf, Ajman on 9th July 2020.
His Excellency Hamad Obaid Taryam Al Shamsi, Director of Ajman Medical District signed the agreement representing Ajman Specialty Hospital, while Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Vice President of the Healthcare Division of Thumbay Group signed on behalf of Thumbay University Hospital and Dr. Nasir Parwaiz, Director of Thumbay Labs signed the agreement for Thumbay Labs. Dr. Thumbay Moideen, the Founder President of Thumbay Group was present at the ceremony.
According to the agreement, patients of Ajman Specialty Hospital requiring advanced treatments will be referred to Thumbay University Hospital, the largest private academic hospital in the region with state-of-the-art healthcare facilities and 350 beds. Patients thus referred can also avail Thumbay University Hospital’s radiology services, lab tests, the 100-bed Long Term Care facility, etc. Furthermore, the agreement also provides for the exchange of specialists, exchange of knowledge and joint scientific research between the two hospitals.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, His Excellency Hamad Obaid Taryam Al Shamsi said, “It is my pleasure to sign these agreements with Thumbay Group. Thumbay University Hospital is a beautiful healthcare facility, and I am sure that it has all the advanced treatments and services for our patients of Ajman Specialty Hospital, including specialist consultations, radiology and complex surgeries. I am confident that this collaboration will be beneficial for the people of Ajman.”

According to the agreement signed with Thumbay Labs, PCR testing of samples collected at Ajman Specialty Hospital will be tested by Thumbay Labs.
